Italy is a dream destination, and if you get the chance to visit, you don’t want to waste it. So to help you prepare, I’ve created the best Italy itinerary with the best places in Italy to visit.
In this Italy trip itinerary, you’ll hit all the top cities from the north to the south. And you’ll get the best activities to do in each!
After reading this post, you’ll know precisely how to vacation in Italy.

The Best Italy Itinerary
Before jumping in, feel free to mix & match the days of this itinerary. This is my take on an ideal Italy itinerary – 5 days. But if your trip is shorter or longer, simply choose your favorite parts of this itinerary to add to your own!
Day 1: Arrive in Rome
Starting off this Italy itinerary 5 days with a bang, we’re starting off in Rome!
I don’t know about you, but Rome immediately comes to mind when someone says Italy. This ancient city has a centuries-old history, old ruins, stunning art, delicious food, and insane architecture. With all that, we have much to cover, so let’s get going!
Visit the Colosseum
The Colosseum is one of the most iconic sites in Rome, so naturally, you can’t miss it. The amphitheater was built around 70-80 AD and is estimated to hold roughly 80,000 people. Impressive for being such an old structure, right?
General admission tickets are about 16 euros. However, I recommend going on a guided tour for two reasons. 1) You’ll have a personal tour guide that goes over the detailed history of the theater; and 2) these guided tours aren’t nearly as crowded as general admission, which makes for a much better experience.
Gaze on the beauty at Trevi Fountain.
The Trevi Fountain is one of the most famous fountains in the world. This fountain, designed by Nicola Salvi in the 18th century, is Rome’s largest and most beautiful.
Interestingly enough, the Trevi fountain was initially built as an aqueduct; and is the city’s oldest water source. So, go marvel at the gorgeous beauty of this iconic landmark.
Explore the famous St. Peter’s Square & St. Peter’s Basilica.
St. Peter’s Square is a large square or piazza in Vatican City, right in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. The impressive structure of St. Peter’s Square alone is worth the visit.
A colonnade comprising 284 large columns and 88 pilasters encircles the square. And on top of those columns are statues representing the saints. So, you can imagine how beautiful it is.
So why is St. Peter’s Square so famous? The square was named after Saint Peter, one of Jesus’ disciplines; he was also the first Catholic Pope. And if crazier than that, the piazza is where Saint Peter was killed.
Understandably, St. Peter’s Square & St. Peter’s Basilica are top destinations when traveling to Italy.
Get Gelato
Gelato is a popular (& tasty) treat in Italy that tourists and natives alike enjoy. And what says I’m vacationing in Italy, like eating delicious gelato?

Day 2 of the Best Italy Itinerary: Rome Pt. 2
Because there is so much to do and see in Rome, we’ll spend 2 days in the ‘Eternal City.’ Here are so more of the best things to do in Rome.
The Gorgeous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi
Yes, yes… fountains were all the rage in Rome. The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, also known as the Fountain of Four Rivers, was another source of fresh water for Romans. Nowadays, it’s a beautiful architectural site that gives visitors a glimpse into the past.
Go on an afternoon food tour
You MUST go on a food tour if you want authentic Italian food. Food tours are the best way to eat great food without wandering for hours or picking a not-so-good restaurant.
These tours usually range from 2.5 to 4 hours long, with some even going for half days.
Marvel at the Roman Forum Ruins
The next stop is the ancient Roman Forum ruins. Once the center of Roman life, the forum was the central spot for public gatherings such as trials and elections.
So, take a step back into history and explore how ancient Romans used to live.

Day 3: Florence
Next on this Italy trip itinerary is Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region. Florence is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to famous artists Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. In addition, the Tuscany region is well known for its landscape, history, and overall Italian culture.
This wouldn’t be the best Italy itinerary if I didn’t include Florence, right? So, here are the best things to do in Florence.
Florence Cathedral
The Florence Cathedral is easiest one of the most recognizable sites of Florence. The cathedral is settled in the center of the old city. It is famous for its Gothic influences, evidenced by its structure.
However, it actually took several years to complete the cathedral. But, nonetheless, it is quite the sight.
Ponte Vecchio
The next spot to visit is Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone bridge over the Arno River. Several shops are actually located on the Ponte Vecchio bridge, making it an excellent spot for souvenirs.
The bridge is also a fantastic spot for a panoramic view of the colorful buildings in the city.
Piazzale Michelangelo
Another excellent place for an epic view of the city is the Piazzale Michelangelo. This square sits on a high hill near the Boboli Gardens and the Palazzo Pitti. So, it’s very accessible.
A statue of David is also right in the center of the plaza. This beautiful statue and the backdrop of the city are perfect opportunities for some great photos. So, have your camera and your pose ready!
Day 4: Cinque Terre
After Florence is Cinque Terre, a string of five small, ancient fishing villages. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Cinque Terre is considered the perfect union between humans and the earth we occupy.
Here’s how to spend your time in Cinque Terre:
Go for a Morning Hike
The Cinque Terre National Park is a popular destination for hikers, with over 40 hiking trails. The Blue Trail is a top trail with hills overlooking the Ligurian Sea and going through 3 of the 5 villages.
So, spend the morning exploring on a breathtaking hike.
Lay out on the Beach
After working out your leg muscles, spend some time lounging on the beach.

Explore the 5 Villages
And lastly, exploring the 5 villages of Cinque Terre is an absolute pleasure. The coastal culture is both charming & beautiful. I suggest booking a guided tour to see the most iconic spots & learn more about the villages’ history.
Day 5 of Best Places in Italy: Venice
The last city on this Italy itinerary – 5 days is Venice. This city is one of the most unique in the world, as the city is entirely on water. Absolutely mindblowing.
This floating city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a delight to visit.
Climb the Campanile di San Marco
The first thing to do in Venice is to climb to the Campanile di San Marco (St Mark’s Campanile). This tower has one of the city’s best views, roughly 99 meters high.
The current campanile is a reconstructed version, as the previous one collapsed in the early 1900s. Despite this, it is still worth the visit.
Visit Doge’s Palace
The Dogo’s Palace is one of the most iconic sites in Venice. It formerly housed the Venetian government and is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Now, it’s a museum with exhibits of ancient Italy and stunning art. It’s quite a treat if you enjoy Italian history.
Cruise The Canals on a Gondola
Yes, it may be a little cliche & rather touristy. But it is a must-do, especially if this is your first time in Venice! Plus, a gondola ride is an excellent way to see the city.
