Unique Places to Visit in Colombia

Bogotá

You can’t leave the capital, Bogotá, Colombia, off your itinerary. I mean, did you even go to Colombia if you didn’t visit Bogotá?

Bogotá is one of South America’s most exciting cities, full of art, history, AMAZING food, and so much more. Plus, there are cultures from all different regions living in the city, so you can experience many cultures all in one place.

Bogotá is also known for its out-of-this-world views. Popular spots to see these incredible views include Monserrate, Torre Colpatria, and popular restaurants like Casa San Isidro or Casa Santa Clara.

Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral

Only an hour from Bogotá, the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral makes for one of the best day trips from the big city. As a religious landmark and because of sheer architectural achievement, the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is a popular site for many.

Surprisingly, the cathedral is located roughly 200 meters below ground! It holds the largest underground cross in the world & is the world’s only basilica dome made entirely out of salt.

Insane.

There are several ways to experience the salt cathedral, including guided tours, a biking experience, and more. The church even holds Holy Mass Sunday at noon.

You can reach Zipaquirá by public transportation (the best way is by bus) or through a tour company.

The Coffee Region

Next on the list of unique places to visit in Colombia is the Coffee Region. As coffee is the leading beverage worldwide, it’s no surprise the Coffee Region, otherwise known as the Coffee Triangle, is a big hit.

And as my coffee drinkers know, Colombia is one of the top places coffee is made. In fact, Colombia produces around 11.5 million bags of coffee per year. (I cannot be the only one shocked by that number. )

So, if you enjoy a nice cup of joe, you MUST visit the Coffee Region. One of the best ways to do that is to book a coffee tour. During the experience, you get to learn all about how coffee is made, and you even get to pick your own coffee beans!

15 most beautiful places in Colombia

Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales is one of the most beautiful places in Colombia, and it needs to have a spot on your itinerary. And if you’re looking for adventure, you’ll definitely find it at this gorgeous nature spot.

Caño Cristales, also known as the River of Five Colors or the Liquid Rainbow, is most famous for its beautiful kaleidoscope of colors. But to catch those gorgeous colors, you have to visit from June to November. At any other time, the river looks like an ordinary river.

Popular activities on the river include wading in the swimming holes, canoeing, or even swimming in the waterfalls.

Due to the government’s mission to restore the partially destroyed river, visitors can only explore the area with a tour company. So, you’ll want to make sure you book in advance because a limited number of visitors are allowed to visit each day.

Bonus Tip: Caño Cristales may not be for everyone due to the adventure experience in nature. The river is located in more of a remote area, so naturally, the journey there may be a bit bumper & outdoorsy than you may be used to.
